To show our appreciation and respect for the diverse tapestry of experiences and cultural heritage within the UTS school community, we take the time to observe and celebrate cultural occasions at our school. We have so much to learn from each other, and when students and staff share their cultures and honour their histories, it brings a greater richness to the UTS educational experience for everyone. A deeper understanding of each other also helps prepare our students to become socially engaged global citizens ready for the future, which is central to the purpose of our school.

UTS is always a school with a lot going on, and this week in particular seems like a flurry of excitement and celebration. After the extravaganza that was SHOW taking place on the weekend (I hope you had a chance to see it!), we started the week with a musical performance to conclude Tamil Heritage Month, as well as launching into a variety of activities to celebrate Black Futures Month at UTS (check here next week for more on that!)

As the days get lighter, excitement builds for the imminent celebration of the Lunar New Year. Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Tibetan and Mongolian cultures celebrate the end of the winter months following lunar cycles, signifying new beginnings, renewal and the hope for a prosperous year ahead.

The UTS Advancing Equity for Asians Committee, Chinese Culture Club, Traditional Chinese Music Ensemble and other student groups at UTS plan to share meaningful aspects of various cultural traditions with our community on Friday, February 9.

During lunch, the Fleck Atrium will have stations for all students to try their hand at Chinese calligraphy (assisted by Mandarin students), shuttlecock, paper cutting, solving riddles and games, and visiting the interactive calligraphic installations on display at the Wright Living Lane Entrance off of Washington Ave.

The culmination of the day for our entire community (including all parents and friends who wish to attend) will take place in Withrow Auditorium from 4 to 5 p.m., providing the opportunity to experience traditional musical performances, Taekwondo, K-pop, singing and dancing, poem recitals and a final quiz game with prizes.

Through these incredibly rich activities, we continue to affirm our commitment to fostering a culture of inclusivity, respect and appreciation for all our students and look forward to Black Futures Month events taking place throughout the school in February.

To all those in our community who celebrate Lunar New Year, 祝大家新年快乐,万事如意!
