UTS is horrified and deeply saddened by the attack that took place in London, Ontario on Sunday, June 6, 2021 against a Muslim family. A family of four was targeted based on their Muslim faith, leaving a nine-year old without a sister, parents and grandmother.
Our hearts are with the friends and family of the Afzaals, who lost valued community members, classmates and colleagues in a senseless attack. We offer our condolences, and also share our support with the Muslim members of the UTS community. We recognize this crime as a grim reminder of Islamophobia in Canada.
UTS is deeply committed to being inclusive and respectful of the diversity which enriches our country and which we should all safely enjoy in Canada, in Toronto and at our school. The UTS community condemns Islamophobia and all other forms of discrimination and racism, and extends our compassion to the Muslim community and our Muslim families at this tragic time.
We include some resources on supporting students and talking about Islamophobia.
We acknowledge that students may be feeling particularly vulnerable without the in-person support of peers and school staff. Our guidance counsellors and social workers are available to provide support by phone or online.
The Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee will host a session for staff and students to hold space, reflect, and share on the Afzaal family tragedy and to identify actions to take against Islamophobia. This session will be held on Friday, June 11 at lunch. Details will be shared with students.
By supporting each other in times like these, we can stand together and build a better world, based on respect, unity and peace.
